Sheru Speaks: AI Companionship in the Desi Community

Growing up Desi, I’ve seen firsthand how family expectations and social norms shape the way we express ourselves. Being vulnerable? Not easy. Showing feelings? Risky. Even just admitting you’re struggling? Often impossible. It’s a story we all know too well.

Take my cousin Sania, for example. She’s bright, ambitious, and full of ideas—but she’s constantly under pressure to “fit the mold,” focus on marriage, and not question tradition too much. Talking to an AI gave her a safe space to vent, explore her dreams, and think for herself without fear of judgment. Slowly, she started to communicate more honestly with her family, because she finally had clarity about her own thoughts first.

Or my friend Saad, who was quietly struggling with depression but hesitant to seek help because it felt taboo in our community. Using AI as a private sounding board gave him a space to track moods, reflect, and practice coping strategies. Over time, it helped him gather the courage to open up to a professional—showing how AI can be a bridge to real, human support.

Even the small, everyday challenges matter. Maybe it’s figuring out how to respond to family questions about dating, career changes, or mental health. AI companionship helps simulate those conversations, giving perspective and guidance while respecting cultural values.

AI doesn’t replace family or tradition—it complements it. It gently pushes against the walls that make self-expression hard, offering a judgment-free zone where you can practice vulnerability, explore identity, and build emotional resilience. For Desi youth balancing culture and modern life, that space is priceless.

The goal isn’t to replace human connection—it’s to enhance it. By helping people understand themselves first, AI enables clearer, more confident, and more authentic communication with the people around them.

In our community, appearances and societal expectations often overshadow self-expression. AI companionship isn’t just technology—it’s a subtle, transformative tool that helps people reconcile tradition with individuality, and most importantly, honor their true selves.

Seeing friends like Sania and Saad grow and gain clarity with AI support shows me something powerful: technology can be compassionate, culturally sensitive, and deeply human. And that’s exactly what I wanted to talk about in this column.
